Nine political parties under the umbrella of the Alliance of Registered Political Parties (ARPP) on Monday declared support for the re-election of Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat in Lagos State.

Governorship candidates of five of the political parties in the ARPP also stepped down in support of Sanwo-Olu and Hamzat in Saturday’s election.

The political parties are the Young Progressives Party (YPP), Action Democratic Party (ADP), Action Peoples Party (APP), Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) and Allied Peoples Movement (APM).

Others are the National Rescue Movement (NRM), the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP).

The five governorship candidates stepping down for Sanwo-Olu are Chief Adeyemi Abiola of APP, Mr Adenipebi Mode-Adekunle of ZLP, and Mrs Funmi Kupoluyi of APM.

Others are Mr Ishola Bamidele of ADP and Mr Ajayi Adebayo of the YPP.

Addressing a news conference on Monday in Ikeja, Mr Ajayi Adebayo, leader of ARPP, said the decision was reached after a thorough analysis of the performance of Sanwo-Olu in Lagos State.

Adebayo said that the group had resolved not to sacrifice various landmark achievements of the Sanwo-Olu-led administration on the altar of bitter politicking.

According to him, ARPP is a group of nine committed and patriotic registered political parties in Lagos State that are interested in the good works of the state government.

It also desired continuity and realisation of the dream Lagos State, he added.

“We reached this decision sequel to our thorough analysis of all the good works and rapid development in Lagos State.

“We cannot sacrifice the various landmark achievements of the present administration scattered all over the state on the altar of bitter politicking.

“The governor’s consistency as a progressive democrat is worthy of due commendation and continuity.

“We observed at a close range his energetic campaign through the nooks and crannies of the state,’’ Adebayo stressed.

He said that Sanwo-Olu had delivered on his social contract with the good people of Lagos State through the famed THEMES mantra.

“It is worthy of note that he literarily saved the country from the scourge of COVID-19 through proactive measures that underscored his responsive and responsible attributes.

“Among others, massive road construction, investments in education, healthcare services, the environment, youth empowerment, tourism, public transportation, housing, science and technology need to be consolidated during his second term.

“It makes a whole lot of sense for Lagos State to be in tune with Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s presidency at a time like this to achieve our age-long desires and lofty aspirations,’’ he said.

According to him, Sanwo-Olu’s message of “GREATER LAGOS RISING’’ reverberates in all and sundry.

He said that the group safely concluded that it had in Sanwo-Olu a governor resolutely committed to take the state to greater heights in years ahead.

“Lagos State at a time like this is better entrusted in the hands of experienced and patriotic leaders.

“A vote for Sanwo-Olu will indeed be an endorsement for continuity and for greater development.

“This support is born out of love and desire for a greater Lagos State which Sanwo-Olu has set the pace and deserves to drive it to fruition.

“We seize this opportunity to inform and urge all our supporters to vote massively on Saturday, March 18 for Babajide Sanwo-Olu as governor and his deputy, Quadri Obafemi Hamzat,’’ Adebayo stressed.

NAN reports that the event was attended by the governorship candidates as well as representatives of the nine political parties in the ARPP.

Sanwo-Olu warns against rejection of old Naira notes

, ,

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos has warned businesses and banks against rejecting old Naira notes, saying the Supreme Court ruling of 8 February is still in force.

The court ruled that the old naira notes and the new ones should co-exist until the determination of the substantive filed by the government of Zamfara, Kaduna and Kogi states.

Many other APC states have joined the suit as plaintiffs and the case adjourned till 22 February.

Information and Strategy commissioner, Gbenga Omotoso, in a statement Wednesday said the stand of the Supreme Court has not changed.

Governor Sanwo-Olu called for patience and calmness of Lagosians following the controversy generated by the Naira shortage crisis.

“The State Government has joined the dispute at the Supreme Court, which today adjourned the hearing of the matter till February 22. When the matter first came up on February 8, the apex court said the old notes remained legal tender.

“That position has not changed. The State Government hereby warns those rejecting the old notes to desist from doing so or face prosecution. It is against the law to reject the old notes as doing so is contrary to the position of the Supreme Court.

Governor Sanwo-Olu urges Lagosians to remain law-abiding and shun mischief makers who may exploit this temporary situation to promote their anti-people agenda. He is confident that the Judiciary will resolve all the issues around the currency shortage crisis.

To cushion the effect of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) directive on the old notes, especially on the vulnerable among us, Lagos State has started the distribution of the food packs promised by the Governor.

The 50% fares slash on all State transportation facilities continues, as directed by Mr. Governor.

Tinubu pledged to honour all his campaign promises to Nigerians, in a speech at the rally, which saw people from all the Northern states offer their support.

They described him as a detribalised Nigerian.

The APC Presidential candidate promised that under his leadership, Nigerians will live in peace regardless of ethnicity and religious differences.

“My respect for this country will continue to increase, and I will honour all my pledges that we all will live in harmony. We belong in each other’s hearts,” he noted.

In his prepared speech, former Lagos State Governor also assured that his government would be for all Nigerians, not favouring any religion or tribe.

He said a testament to this was when he, as Lagos State Governor, appointed people into the state cabinet from other regions of the country.

“From the moment I enlisted in politics, I have always been nationalistic and detribalised in my approach. I do not operate on the basis of ethnicity, region or religion. I have friends and associates in all corners of this country.

“As governor of Lagos State, I constituted a cabinet, comprising competent people from all parts of Nigeria. We had the Yoruba, as we had the Igbo and Arewa. What was important to me was not your ethnicity or creed, it was your competence and the value you would bring to governance and people.

“To replicate this feat for the country is why I have offered myself for the presidency,” he said.

On his plans for the country most especially for the North, Tinubu promised to tackle the security situation being experienced across the country, stating that the economy cannot thrive in an insecure environment.

He added, “If elected president, my highest priorities shall be the protection of our land and prosperity of its people. I shall tackle this nation’s problems with a commitment to solving them.

“I will give priority to confronting security, making the economy one of widely shared prosperity and paying special attention to agriculture like the present government of President Muhammadu Buhari.

“On security, my policy is not an artificial created to sound good for this campaign. Our security policy is based on dedicated study and long conversations with experts in this field.

“I used the same approach to tackle the bad security situation that faced me when I became governor of Lagos.

“I created programs and institutions to solve the real and dangerous challenges Lagos faced. I shall increase security personnel and better equip them. Advanced air and ground surveillance technology will identify, track and attack the criminals until they are utterly defeated.”

He also promised to provide jobs for the nation’s youths, while also ensuring that electricity generation is improved to allow more people to start up small businesses to feed their families.

He added that great attention would be given to agriculture, to ensure that there is increased food security through enhanced productivity and improved farm incomes, thus returning farming to its prominent position.

He said massive investments would be made in road and rail infrastructure to ensure easy movement of goods and products while also strengthening the education sector to guarantee the future and guide the youth toward better lives.

“We will invest in the Kolmani Oil Wells Project inaugurated by President Buhari and indeed in all vital infrastructural projects such as the Mambilla Power Project, the AKK gas pipeline projects.

“We shall revive our inland waterways through the dredging of the River Niger and make sure we cut down on our steel import bill by making the Ajaokuta Steel Company work,” he added.

Kano State Governor Abdullahi Ganduje said Nigeria is a country of diversity and noted that Asíwájú has demonstrated that he could utilise the country’s diversity for development and prosperity.

“He is a symbol of unity, a product of unity in diversity. He is the right person to be endorsed by Arewa and the best for the presidency,” he said.

The Chairman Arewa Community APC, Alhaji Saadu Yusuf Gulma Dandare, said Asíwájú Tinubu had done a lot for Lagos and Nigeria, adding that if the country has more of him in each geopolitical zones, it will be a better place and people will not be flocking Lagos.

Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu is a man of many traditional honours across the country, from north to south, west to east. The array of titles he has garnered was only comparable to that of Chief Moshood Abiola, winner of the 1993 Presidential election.
